No orange in “Santra Burfi”

Sprouts Brand Story

The oranges of Nagpur are world known and the Haldiram’s products too are well known. However M/s Haldiram has been cheating consumers, taking disadvantage of this geographical tag. The Nagpur Santra Burfi is sold in the name of sweet and juicy oranges, but the Burfi does not contain full orange substance.

Although a glossy pack carries a prominent tag as “orange burfi”, its ingredients prove that it contains hardly two per cent orange pulp. Other contents are only the refined sugar, Ash Gourd and harmful chemicals. Over and above this, the box of “Burfi” carries a tagline “ This is only a brand name or trade mark and does not represent its true nature”, in one of the corners of the box.

There is a repeated demand that the shops must display the name boards in the local language. However this rule does not seem to be applicable to the companies. Half of the consumers are unaware what they are eating.

Basically any product should match the specification of the brand under which it is sold and the consumers should get the satisfaction of the product they are buying. In these circumstances, how can a product made of a pumpkin be sold as the orange burfi ? Can anyone sell coconut water in the name of branded liquor ? Then how such cheating by the Haldiram is tolerated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and how the FSSAI grants license to such products?

Can any product be mixed with harmful Sunset Yellow INS 110 and sold as an orange product ? The Sunset Yellow INS 110 has been banned by countries like Norway, Finland and Sweden since 2000. Besides, the use of this colour has been banned for companies in the UK since 2008.

Yet this harmful substance causing allergy, kidney ailments, tumour, migraine, stomach and hormonal problems is sold in the name of mithai to hoodwink the consumers even in 2022. The reputed brand like Haldiram is cheating the consumers. Who will take action against it ? The Haldiram management could not be reached for comment.
