The Wadia Trust’s Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital was set up to provide free medical treatment to poor and needy pregnant women, at Parel. However heavy fees and other charges are being collected from the patients.

Resultantly the hospital administration has been violating the norms of the indenture thus bypassing the basic aim with which the hospital was set up. These shocking facts are revealed from the information obtained by the Special Investigation Team of Sprouts through RTI.

The well-known industrialist Nusserwangee Nowrosjee Wadia donated Rs 3 lakh to purchase land for the Wadia Hospital on July 27, 1926. In addition, Wadia donated vital instruments/ apparatus worth Rs 3 lakh to the hospital.

The then Municipal Corporation City of Bombay (MCCB ) (now BMC) and the then Governor of Bombay (Now Maharashtra Government) have also donated Rs 5 lakh each. Thus the hospital to provide free treatment to pregnant women was set up at a cost of Rs 16 lakh at that time.

Subsequently, the Trust was set up by Nusserwangee Nowrosjee Wadia, MCCB, and the Governor of Bombay (GOB) under the Indian Trust Deed Act 1882. The trust rules stipulated that poor and needy women will be given free medical treatment in the hospital. As per the indenture (dated July 27, 1926), the hospital was named” Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital”.

It was decided that the Trust would be run under the control of the “Board of Management”. It was also decided that Nusserwangee Nowrosjee Wadia will appoint his three representatives. Besides, it was also stipulated that the Maharashtra Government, BMC and the Mill Owners’ Association will appoint two representatives each on the trust. However all the rules of the trust were violated by the hospital administration, the documents obtained by the Sprouts have revealed.
